Real Action. Real Impact.
Since our founding in 1968, Cumberland Container has grown with a simple principle: do right by our customers, our employees, and our community. That same principle drives our sustainability practices today.
We design smarter packaging, recycle everything we produce, power our facility with renewable energy, and manage our resources responsibly, proving that sustainability isn’t a promise for tomorrow, it’s a responsibility we live by every day.
CORRUGATED MATERIALS
Sustainable in, sustainable out.
Recycled and Certified Paperboard
All of our suppliers are SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) certified. We purchase sheets made from a combination of recycled and virgin fibers. Since wood fibers can only be recycled 5 to 7 times, fresh fiber is essential to keep the cycle going. Corrugated packaging is therefore one of the most sustainable materials available: strong, renewable, and central to a true circular economy.
Right-Sized Packaging
Our team designs packaging that uses as little material as needed without sacrificing durability, reducing both cost and carbon.
INK & WATER
Treating every drop responsibly.
Low-VOC, Water-Based Inks
All inks used at Cumberland are low- VOC (volatile organic compounds and water-based, reducing environmental impact.
In-House Ink Kitchen
We operate our own in-house ink kitchen, mixing and producing much of our ink supply directly on site. This not only gives us greater control over ink usage and quality but also reduces the environmental impact of long-distance shipping.
On-Site Ink Washing
All inks are washed off our print plates in-house using a dedicated ink washing station.
Water Filtration
Any leftover ink is pumped into our ink treatment facility, installed in 2000 and regularly monitored to meet EPA and state standards. The system separates water from ink solids so water can be safely reused or released into the public sewer system.
ENERGY
Powered by progress.
Solar-Powered Operations
All corrugated converting equipment is powered by electricity. Our 680-panel solar system provides a substantial portion of our energy needs, reducing reliance on the grid and cutting emissions.
Energy-Efficient Equipment
We continually invest in high-efficiency motors, compressors, and systems to minimize energy consumption.
LED Lighting
In 2020, we replaced all fluorescent fixtures with LED lighting, lowering energy use across the facility.
WASTE
Everything to cycle.
100% Corrugated Scrap Recycled
All scrap generated during the box-making process is collected, baled, and sold to certified recycling partners, ensuring that every fiber re-enters the production cycle instead of going to landfill.
Closed-Loop Material Recovery
Through recycling partnerships, we help keep fibers and materials within the same supply chain, reinforcing the principles of a circular economy.
At Cumberland Container, we believe that real sustainability means doing the work. From what we buy to how we treat waste, every step at Cumberland is designed to protect our environment, reduce emissions, and uplift the communities we serve.
We don’t just talk sustainability, we live it.
